The ImDB description of the 2006 film Idiocracy runs as follows:
Private Joe Bauers, the definition of “average American”, is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he’s easily the most intelligent person alive.
But what is actually very interesting is how the world got to be like that for Private Joe Bauers. The opening scene is fascinating and well worth a watch. Is this our future? I can’t help but think that it may be. Certainly there is a scary amount of truth in the opening sequence.

…. and if you have not even heard of this film, you would not be alone. And you may want to hear Mike Judge (the Director) talk about its strange fate.
