Landing at St Barts

This is not the first time I have written about scary plane landings, and I also have to admit to a liking of the show “Airplane investigation”.

I have never been to St Barts, but I must say that after seeing these collections of landings (or attempted landings, or in some cases even failed landings), I can see why so many people chose to travel there on fat yachts!

The video that started a little flurry of responses on You Tube was this one, which shows just how easy it is to get it wrong (I guess the advice here is to try and put it down all the other plane’s tire marks are, not just after those marks…)

This response shows just how many people fail and have to try again.

And finally, this one shows how it should be done (but also provides a pilot view angle of just how scary this airport is.)

Hey Caspar, saw your blog post. I have flown in and out of St. Barts and it’s as scary as it seems! I basically kept my eyes closed during the landing and take-off. There’s a cross that looks like it’s commemorating a death on the road that the planes fly over on their way in.

We flew out in one of those puddle-jumper planes and a 400 or 500 pound man was sitting on one side and I was convinced he was going to tip the plane over. Luckily, the pilot looked over at him and said, you’ll be ok there. In true St. Barts fashion, he was with a skinny model-type.

And don’t get me started on the roads in St Barts – that was another case of closing your eyes and hoping for the best because they’re so narrow you’re sure you’ll either hit the car coming at you or fall off the cliff on the other side. (And no, I wasn’t the one driving when my eyes were closed!)

I love reading and writing about dangerous aiports and I have to agree with you that this is really scary – though unlike Bianca I haven’t actually been there. It’s a place I probably wouldn’t go to because of the runway!

Though all the videos you see make the runway look small, I really think it is actually like that, which is scary really. One video I saw was a plane going over the heads of some people sat in a car – a mini cooper convertible and all the driver did was duck! Insane – most have been a local.

    Anyway, enjoyed the read.
