The Athena in Sydney Harbour

If you were in Sydney for New Year’s Eve you will not have missed the Athena. Owned by serial entrepreneur perhaps best known for co-founding Netscape, Jim Clarke, the Athena is a clipper-bowed 3 masted Gaff Rigged Schooner (apparently, at least according to this wikipedia entry).

There are few man made things that can hold their own in the Sydney Harbour, especially when moored against the backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Some pictures of the Athena below, mainly taken from the Charter website on which you can charter her for the relatively reasonable price of 500,000 Euro for a week…

And some pictures of The Athena in Sydney Harbour this year.

If you do want to read / see more of this amazing vessel, then check out the Royal Huisman website link.

I’m a huge fan of sailing. Particularly when compared to motor-yachts, which vibrate from the engines and roll in the swell. But to me Athena is simply not attractive. With all that money and space, they could have built something much more sleek and with Bermuda, not gaff rig. It looks like Esmaralda http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esmeralda_(BE-43) which is fine for a training ship but not for a yacht. A yacht should look like this: http://www.charterworld.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/AY41-superyacht.png
