Death in the Sauna

Tragedy struck at the 2010 World Sauna Championships, when the two finalists were taken to hospital with burns after the sauna reached temperatures of more than 110 degrees. Full CNN article here.

One of the¬†competitors Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy (presumably the chap on the left in the photo) very sadly died in hospital. Wikipedia has a summary of the brilliant rules of the event, which include not being allowed to lean forward too much…

So who the heck even knew this thing existed until last week? No one. It happened and minded its own business and the world was none the wiser.

Thankfully the champion of the last 5 years, and the other man taken to hospital, Timo Kaukonen, last year made a short film about his life and his passion for competitive sauna-sitting. Watch it here in HD with thanks the Future Shorts.

Madness.
