The Dark Side of Dubai

This article was sent to me by a friend when it was first published, and I have since forwarded it to a number of people I know who live or did live in Dubai, all of whom are in complete agreement with pretty much every word. I also first posted it when I started this blog, but I was watching a story last night about Dubai and the “slaves” on who’s backs this city has been built.

I have been to Dubai around 7 times between 2003 (when the Dubai Marina was still an idea) and 2010 (when Dubai Marina looked like this),  both for work and for play, and though I would love to say that the issues and problems Johann Hari reports on so brilliantly here are tucked away from view, and therefore easy to turn a blind eye to, the reality is that they are as plain to see as the shiny buildings and the sand that surrounds them.

Its a long article, but it has a lot to say.  Read it here on the Independent’s website.
